Mindful Leadership in Action – Tip of the Week – Train Your Mind to Be Present with Every Interaction

When you are present, you are able to have mindful interactions throughout your day, which are critical to your success as a leader. People look to see if their leaders are truly there or just faking it.  When you are “not there,” people will interpret according to their own biases.  They may think you don’t agree with them, or that what they are saying is not important, or worse, that they are not important.

Being present requires the ability to focus or concentrate.  You can practice focus every time you speak to anyone.  Try your best to stay with the sound of their voice and the content of their words.  When the mind wanders, which it will, gently bring it back, without judgment.  Don’t worry about how many times your mind wanders.  Know that real success is in noticing that the mind has wandered and coming back.  If you make this a habit you will notice how your focus and ability to be present increases.  You are simply developing a skill.
