Mindful Leadership in Action – Tip of the Week – If You Want the Benefits of a Mindful Life, Make a Commitment to Yourself to Develop a Daily Practice

If you have decided that you aspire to live a Mindful life then commit to yourself to develop a daily practice and to be Mindful in your life.  This will include formally practicing a particular technique or set of techniques daily.  It will also include deciding each day to what aspect of your life you will apply Mindfulness.  It could be your meetings, or a work out or the drive home.

Sometimes it’s difficult to find the time to formally sit.  So you may decide to schedule your formal practice as if it was a scheduled meeting.  Decide what time of the day is best for you and when you will be able to be most consistent, perhaps first thing in the morning or before or after dinner or just before going to bed.  Try out different options and see what works best for you.

Then each day decide how you will apply Mindfulness in Action.  You might decide that you will mindfully listen and speak at every meeting you have that day.  Or another day you might decide you will drive mindfully any time you are in the car.  Perhaps you may wish to apply Mindfulness to your entire workout.

By applying Mindfulness to various aspects of your life, you are training yourself such that being Mindful is “normal” for you or just the way you do things.  Soon you won’t even realize you are doing it because it will just happen.  And suddenly when you are not Mindful, you will notice and change course immediately.
